The CapDev Perspective on Fundraising in Challenging Economic Times

Financial markets decline…banks fail…recession fears surface…what do these ‘not so sunny’ news stories mean to nonprofits?

Needs in our communities don’t stop during economic downturns; in fact, many nonprofits already providing needed services often experience even greater demand. At times when the for-profit sector suffers, more and more people turn to the nonprofit sector for support. How can an already ‘pressed’ nonprofit sector satisfy increased demand when the very people that the sector looks to for support are becoming the ones in need?

What nonprofits need now more so than ever is to be even more strategic, more energized, and more aggressive at telling its story to the community, and ultimately more proactive in seeking funds for its support. While the sector needs to be sensitive to the financial ‘woes’ suffered by many donors and to embrace its own ability to be ‘lean,’ nonprofits must use times like these to focus on their core mission and to diversify their funding sources so that the budget bottom line does not resemble the stock market ticket tape of recent weeks.
