Assistant Vice President for Development, Wake Forest College: Essential Functions
The Assistant Vice President for Development, Wake Forest College will report to the Associate Vice President for University Development and the Provost. The Assistant Vice President provides leadership, direction, and coordination for all activities relating to development for the college, and more specifically college faculty initiatives, Student Life, Career Development, Libraries, and the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. The person in this position serves as the main communication liaison with the Provost, Dean of the College, faculty, and College Board of Visitors in order to fully understand and articulate the vision of Wake Forest University. The Assistant VP is responsible for the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of prospects for the undergraduate college and oversees all activities relating to development for the school.

Responsible for the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for an assigned group of prospects (with an emphasis on major gift activity), including individuals, corporations, and foundations. Pertaining to college faculty initiatives, Student Life, Career Development, Libraries, and the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences.
Develops and implements comprehensive fundraising goals, objectives, and plans for the college.
Organizes and oversees all functions of the College Board of Visitors.
Supports the Associate VP in coordinating operations regarding major gifts fundraising, alumni relations, public relations, and communications.
Establishes and implements effective plans for promoting capital needs, endowments, and other long-range funding activities.
Coordinates personal visits on alumni, parents, and friends of the undergraduate college to identify potential leaders for the school.
Assists the Vice President in identifying and working with key volunteers to establish and strengthen advisory boards for the College of Arts & Sciences.
Writes and submits proposals based on input from alumni, friends, and university academic leaders.
Prepares reports for donors reflecting the uses of their gifts.
Coordinates prospect identification, solicitation, and stewardship activities via personal visits, telephone, email and letter writing.
Establishes and implements short-term and long-term departmental goals and objectives; evaluates program effectiveness and effects changes required for improvement.
Serves as a key member of the Provost and Dean's management team and as an ambassador of the college.
Promotes university priorities and image to constituents. Serves as front line staff to promote campus goals and objectives. Maintains current knowledge of university-wide institutional priorities. As appropriate, and with the knowledge of the Vice President, qualifies, cultivates and solicits prospects on behalf of other campus units.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Represents the university in various institutional divisions as well as the general public and local community.
May represent the department at business and community meetings and university functions.
May develop and manage budgets for fundraising activities.
Critical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The Assistant Vice President for Development, Wake Forest College must be an accomplished fundraising professional who understands the nature and purpose of higher education and who has: extensive and successful experience in fundraising at progressively higher levels; strong interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills reflected in an ability to work effectively with senior management personal, professional colleagues, and prospects in a team-oriented environment. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree with seven or more years relevant experience preferably in direct fundraising or sales (an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered). Other critical skills for this position include:
Knowledge of modern university capital gift techniques.
Knowledge and a proven history of gaining support and financial commitment of others.
Knowledge and a clear understanding of Wake Forest University, its component schools and programs, and strategic direction.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Knowledge of alternative, creative, and entrepreneurial fundraising programs, methods, and techniques.
Strong interpersonal and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Knowledge of communication principles and marketing techniques.
Skilled in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new planned giving strategies and procedures.
Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
Ability to identify and secure alternative funding/revenue sources.
Knowledge of database construction, management, and retrieval methods.
Ability to supervise and train volunteers and student workers, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
Experience in management of a team of fundraisers.
Experience in volunteer management.
Ability to travel frequently, both regionally and nationally.
Valid driver's license with good driving record; must be insurable.
