RALEIGH, N.C. -
Fundraising at Meredith College topped $18 million in the 2013-14 fiscal year, more than double any year in its history, school officials said Monday.

Meredith's endowment is now $93 million, the highest in college history.

Meredith is raising funds as part of its Beyond Strong fundraising campaign, which will be its largest campaign in history. Meredith's 125th anniversary is in 2016.

The push for funding is an important one for Meredith, which is competing for students at a time when many single-sex institutions have had trouble. Nearby William Peace University, for example, began admitting men after more than a century of serving only women in its undergraduate programs.

"It is so touching to hear donors' reasons for giving to Meredith -- oftentimes to honor a mother, wife, daughter, or sister who excelled here," President Jo Allen said in a statement. "Others give because they value Meredith's dynamic legacy of educating students to become even stronger and because they know the power of educated women in corporations, nonprofits, communities and families."

The fundraising campaign is led by honorary co-chairs Judy Woodruff, a news anchor who graduated from Meredith in 1968, and Raleigh businessman O. Temple Sloan, Jr.

"This is an exciting and critical time for Meredith," Sloan said. "We are off to a great start in our campaign to take Meredith to the next level."

Meredith, a women's college located off Hillsborough Street in west Raleigh, has 1,650 undergraduates. Its Class of 2018 included 471 students, the second-largest in school history.
