Our Campaign Group provides a broad range of hands-on consulting services. Our professional staff includes specialists in all areas of fundraising initiatives, including capital campaigns, major gift solicitation, planned giving, grantsmanship, board and staff development and training, feasibility studies and campaign planning, and prospect identification and cultivation.

Our philosophy is to offer personalized services designed to meet the individual needs of each client. We believe that the most effective fundraising occurs when we enter into a genuine partnership with our clients.

The Capital Development Services team is organized to facilitate the growth of nonprofit organizations and foundations, and we firmly believe that our expanding array of cost-effective services has helped us to achieve that goal.

Working with several statewide and national campaigns in the late 1970's and early 1980's, John developed a detailed knowledge of philanthropic leadership and financial resources.  In 1984, after recognizing the need for a motivated, experienced and cost-effective fundraising consulting firm servicing nonprofits throughout the greater Southeast, John established the firm now called Capital Development Services.

Through a philosophy of direct involvement with clients and their fundraising concerns, John has brought together an experienced staff of fundraising consultants, associates, writers and researchers who have provided sound advice to hundreds of respected nonprofits throughout the Southeast.

Allan Burrows was named President of Capital Development Services in 2006, after 12 years with the company. Allan manages the company's marketing, operations, campaign and search divisions. In his 20+ years of fundraising experience, Allan has supervised capital and endowment campaigns throughout the Southeastern U.S. for various clients including cultural, environmental, educational, social, religious, health and human services, and economic development nonprofits. He has experience working with leadership, major gift solicitation, development and executive search in all kinds of nonprofits and has expertise in estate planning, board development, organizational strategic planning, and capital campaigns.

An alumnus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Allan began his work in 1986 as a development officer at the Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina. In 1990, Allan became Vice President for Development and Operations at the North Carolina Child Advocacy Institute, prior to joining Capital Development Services in 1994. A Warrenton, NC native, Allan and his wife, Laura have two children, and live in Winston-Salem. Additionally Allan has served on the board of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Forsyth County, volunteered with his children’s activities through scouting and sports, and served as past stewardship chairman and related activities of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem. Currently he is serving his second term on the board of Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem, and is serving a term on the board of the N.C. Center for Nonprofits.

With over 23 years of client services and financial management experience, Ann Bennett-Phillips serves as Vice President, managing all of Capital Development Services' counsel staff ensuring that every client's fundraising needs are met in the most timely and cost-effective manner. Ann is personally involved with each client and is responsible for coordinating the services provided by the company's counselors.

She supervises the company's executive search services and all areas of fundraising initiatives, including capital campaigns, major gift solicitation, planned giving, grantsmanship, board and staff development and training, feasibility studies and campaign planning, and prospect identification and cultivation as well as serves as the Chief Financial Officer for Capital Development Services.

Ann has served on numerous charitable and civic boards including the NC Center for Public Television, Forsyth Tech Foundation, Forsyth Tech Board of Governors, Vienna School PTA, Central YMCA of Winston-Salem, Metro YMCA of Forsyth County, Wake Forest University Planned Giving Advisory Council and Leadership Winston-Salem Connections program.

Ann is a native of Winston-Salem, NC and a graduate of NC State University and the NC School of Banking.  She enjoys tennis, horse back riding, snow skiing, hiking and traveling.  Ann has two children, Conner and Parker, and resides in Pfafftown, NC with her husband, Wesley.

Having held positions in non-profit management since the early 1990s, Clare brings significant professional and volunteer experience from the non-profit sector to her work at Capital Development Services. As the Marketing Director of three N.C. retirement communities, she developed and executed marketing plans to ensure success in an increasingly competitive marketplace. She has also provided consultant services on several major projects to assist non-profits.

In her role at Capital Development Services, she is responsible for the company's communications and marketing efforts in responding to the needs of non-profit organizations looking for customized solutions to their development and staffing needs.

A Winston-Salem native, Clare is a graduate of N.C. State University. She and her husband live in Winston-Salem with their three daughters. An avid volunteer, Clare serves on local non-profit boards including Sally's Angels, Crisis Control Ministries, and YMCA Camp Hanes; she volunteers with efforts to promote the UNC School of the Arts; serves on the vestry of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church; and enjoys family trips, exercising, and reading as time allows.

Margaret Turner has worked in the nonprofit sector since 2001 in a variety of capacities. She recently graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a Masters of Public Administration with a focus in Nonprofit Management. Margaret received a BA in Sociology from Wake Forest University and is a dedicated Demon Deacon fan! Prior to joining the team at Capital Development Services she worked as the Development Manager at Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina where she aided in raising over $3 million in an annual campaign.

Margaret is a native and current resident of Winston-Salem, and is involved with many nonprofits. She attends Home Moravian Church, where she serves on the World Hunger and Global Concerns Committee as well as the Branding and Marketing Committee. She also serves on leadership committee for CROP Walk of Forsyth County.
